IMPROVING YOUR SPELL CASTING

by Nicole Rivero

Whether you’re an experienced or beginner Witch, we have always had issues with spells not working, despite your best effort and complying with all of the instructions you could find.

One of the biggest issues that comes up, are what type of supplies and day of the month you use. There is a plethora of items that you could use in order for your spell to work properly, including candles, herbs, incense, crystals, and oils.

What you need will vary depending on the type of spell you are casting and also how complicated the ritual is. As a general rule, a more complex spell will necessitate more equipment than a simple spell.

Harnessing the Energy of Materials

Materials are fundamental to a spell working as a sizable amount of energy is required to get a spell working is generated by various materials and witchcraft tools.

Witchcraft Tools
Five Basic Ritual and Witchcraft Tools
1. Wand, which represents the air.
2. Athame, which represents the fire.
3. Chalice, which represents the water.
4. Pentacle, which represents the earth.
5. Censer, which also represents air.
You can buy these at a pagan store for witchcraft and Wicca, or online. They don’t have to be very expensive and their purpose is to channel the energy of the witch and make the spell function better.

Cleansing and Purifying your Tools

When you get your tools, you need to have them cleansed of any negative energy that might be inside them. Physically clean them and then spiritually clean them by smudging them with a White Sage Stick or a Sage Stick mixed with other herbs.

You can also bury them in the ground for several days. It takes past associations with the tools and dissipates them within the earth. This is great for when you buy or inherit a used tool.

There is a water method that also works for cleansing. You basically immerse the item in a natural source of water such as the sea, a lake, or a river. You can also use a bowl of water and a few pinches of sea salt dissolved in it.

When the item has become cleansed, you can use it for magical purposes.

The Moon

The connection between the Moon and a Wiccan Witch is extremely intimate.
Depending on the spell you are casting, you should choose a phase of the moon that will best represent the intension you are sending out into the world.
New Moon
The new moon is the beginning of the lunar cycle, and means that the moon is completely in line with the sun and the Earth. We see a dark sky with no visible moon. It’s a time of newness and rejuvenation.

The new moon is the three days after the new face of the moon as well as the day of the new face of the moon.

Spells: New beginnings of any sort, beauty, health, personal improvement or new employment.

Waxing Moon
The Waxing moon is the period of time between the new moon and the full moon.

Every night, the moon gets a little larger. Any spell work that requires growth should be done now.

Spells: Courage, motivation, inspiration, friendship, elemental magick, healing or luck.

Full Moon
This is a time when the Moon is at its most powerful, and the magic most potent.

Performing any positive spell at this time will achieve good results. Since the full moon only truly occurs for one night out of the entire lunar cycle, it can be hard to fit it into your schedule. You can harness the energy of the full moon for about 2 days before or after the night the moon is truly full.

Spells: Artistic projects, love, romance, fertility, psychic abilities or making decisions. Also healing, guidance, and completion spells.

Waning Moon
The moon is waning as it gets smaller again, after the full moon.

As the moon seems to disappear in the sky, use this time to do spell work to remove things from your life. The waning moon is a good time for the casting out of the old ways, banishing old habits, smoking, eating habits, the removal of troubles and worries.

Spells: Banishing bad habits, addictions, or ending relationships

Changing of the Seasons

The day you choose to cast your spell on affects the power of the spell. If you choose one of the Wiccan Sabbaths or on a Full Moon, your spell will be much more powerful.

Yule (Winter Solstice):
This is a time of rebirth; the God is born, and light is returning to the earth. This is a time to celebrate making it through the longest night.

Many Witches stay up all night to watch the sun rise, or keep candles burning until morning. We also like to celebrate with stories, songs, and good company.

Imbolc (Brigid):
February 2. The first faint stirrings of spring. In some mythologies, the infant God is being nursed by his mother, the young Goddess.

This fest is also a celebration of Brigid, the Celtic goddess of healing, poetry, and smithcraft. It is a time for new beginnings, including initiation or dedication.

Ostara (Spring Equinox):
The beginning of spring; the earth is awakening, and we celebrate life and growing. The name comes from the Teutonic Goddess Eostre, after whom Easter was named. Many Witches honor the God and Goddess as youth and maiden.

Beltane (May Day):
May 1. A celebration of the union of the God and Goddess and the fertility of the land.
Also a good time for self-blessings and land blessings. We often celebrate this holiday by dancing the Maypole.

Litha (Midsummer, Summer Solstice):
The height of summer, and a good time for magickal wokings because of the abundance of energy. Many Witches celebrate the God in particular on this holiday.

Lammas (Lughnasadh):
August 2. The first harvest and a time for giving thanks for the gifts of the earth. The Goddess is often seen as the bountiful Mother.

Mabon (Fall Equinox):
We celebrate the second harvest and fruits of autumn. At this time there is a balance between light and darkness; afterwards, the balance shifts toward darkness.

Samhain:
October 31. The death of the God; the Goddess is seen as the Crone. This is often called the Witches’ New Year.

It is a time for communicating with, honoring, and letting go of our dead.

Incense
Incense symbolizes the element of air and will assist you indrawing in greater energy towards magic to be performed. Incense holds a pivotal role in spell casting and is employed to drive away evil spirits and to bring in luck and positive energy.

Crystals
By using crystals the energy gets focused to a point providing greater power to the spells cast. Practitioners believe that spell casts using crystals will be more powerful than those rituals that do not enjoy their graceful presence.

They are amazing for Amulets. An Amulet is an ornament or small piece of jewelry thought to give protection against evil, danger, or disease.

You can wear them everyday for added protection or just when you are casting a spell.
Here is an example of an Amethyst Crystal Amulet

Crystals have numerous meanings, as well as a Zodiac Signs, Elements, and Planet.

Here is a little guide for the most popular crystals to use during a spell and their stone meaning.

If a stone catches your attention make sure you research all of the Metaphysical Properties of that stone. Crystals have to be my favorite tool that we use in spells.

Besides enhancing your spell casting with them. They provide protection in your house when you use a Crystal Grid and when out and about the town.
