the surprising truth about money’s banishment

Hello there everyone,

Here’s Dave with a further fascinating explanation of Money’s status as a banished spirit:

Money had extremely powerful deities as parents.

(The birth and spiritual genealogy of Money is something we’ll dive into more deeply in the MONEY course itself… but for now, suffice it to say that her father had a singular say over the laws of the spirit realm.)

One of these laws—as many cultures have recognized—concerns the natural limit on human life

The most important distinction between humans and spirits is human mortality. Without it, we could advance in mystical understanding and power without limit, and eventually challenge the spirits in their own realm.

(It’s no coincidence that the witch Jesus, considered by many to be the most deific—or “spirit-y”— mortal, is most famous for his apparent escape from this limitation.)

So… back to Money.

Though Money is known today largely for her implication in horrible crimes (climate change, genocide, the perpetuation of systemic inequality), when she was born she was a fundamentally philanthropic spirit.

(Philanthropy, interestingly, literally means “human-loving”—its etymological evolution into its primary current meaning of “donating money” hints at the fundamental link between money and love for human beings.)

Money’s love for the humans was so great that she gave them the most precious gift she could:

The capacity to escape death

Money’s Banishment

The specifics of how precisely Money gave this gift require an explanation that we don’t quite have space to fully flesh out here. (We’ll be exploring it in depth in the MONEY course.)

But when she gave the gift, and broke the divine law, material currency didn’t yet exist.

It was the time of ancient gift economies—well before people used coins or cowry shells as cash—and, at that time, Money was nothing but spirit.

Not unlike Prometheus (who was punished with having his liver eaten by an eagle every day for the crime of giving humans the gift of fire), Money was punished by her deific father for her deeply philanthropic gift to humans with banishment—to the mortal, material realm.

Kind of one of those “Oh yeah, you like them so much? Why don’t you go live with them forever?”

This is when, and why, she first appeared on earth in the form of material currency.

She lives among us in this form still, a spirit in essence but painfully confined to the mortal realm—both material and intangible, eternal and ephemeral, non-dual and violently dualistic.

(It’s no accident that the most archetypal form of money—gold—is one of the most eternal, incorruptible substances on the planet. The near-eternal metal gravitates to money’s immortal essence, quietly hinting at her origin.)

You can sense her yearning for her homeland in the way she strains to lose her material form, as more and more transactions become electronic.

And though the terror and trauma of her banishment has collected a whole host of dark and twisted energies around her… she still continues to give herself in love to humanity, constantly on the lookout for new ways to help us escape the limitations of our finite life.

This mythic account of Money’s nature and banishment isn’t simply a bittersweet metaphor.

It’s a framework that opens doors to pragmatic practices that create wealth and heal our relationship not only to all things financial, but to this entire material incarnation we’ve found ourselves in.

Tomorrow we’ll be sharing a (somewhat intense, but very effective) practice that you can get started with—

But in the meantime, try out this preliminary practice, to begin warming yourself up and opening the channel of empathy with this most misunderstood of spirits.

  1. Setting a timer for 5 minutes, and closing your eyes:
  2. Imagine a goddess, who loved human beings—who loved you—so much that she gave up her divinity and incarnated in this painful, mortal, gritty, dirty material world.
  3. Simply allow yourself to feel the weight of that—of what it must have been like for her to be banished to this realm, by her own father, on account of love.
  4. When the five minutes are complete, and the timer goes off, close the practice with a simple “Thank you, Money,” spoken out loud.

Hi – it’s me, Carolyn again ;) — this account resonates so much with me, the vision of Money as a human-loving deity like Prometheus, cast out from the realm of the gods for her very generosity.

Makes me tear up a little, actually.

Stay tuned for tomorrow, when we’ll be sending out a potent, detailed alchemical exercise for healing your relationship with money.

And we’ll not only describe the exercise to you tomorrow, we’ll discuss it in depth with you at the free, live CASH training on beginning work with the spirit of Money.

love and villainy,

Carolyn

P.S. Here’s one of Dave’s favorite money jams: If I Were a Rich Man – from Fiddler on the Roof. Isn’t it sweet?

P.P.S. On Wednesday, November 13th (tomorrow!), Dave and I will be opening registration for our co-created course, MONEY.
